Happy Awate Day: September 1, 2021

Awate Team
August 31, 2021

Today is Awate Day. It is the day on which we remember our hero Hamid Idris Awate who on September 1, 1961 raised his gun with determination, and started the Eritrean revolution that would rid Eritrea of Ethiopian occupation. His dream and that of his colleagues and followers was achieved in May 24, 1991. However, that day also turned out to be the start of the Isaias Afwerki era–heralding worse oppression and injustices. And that is why the torch of Awate will stay lighted until Eritreans are truly free.

On September 1, 2000, this website was created as an alternative voice to the State-controlled media and its satellites, and to be the voice of the voiceless. Today we also embark on our twenty-first year of serving the cause of the Eritrean people.

For the Awate Team, today is a day of reflection: other tasks can wait a few days more. Today is the day we reserve for assessing our performance so far, a day of renewing our pledge to stay the course until the Eritrean people are free, until their dignity is reclaimed, until their shattered dreams are restored, until the sun of freedom rises over our beloved Eritrea.

Happy Awate Day to all our friends, colleagues, supporters and our general readership
Happy Awate Day to all Eritreans suffering under the yoke of tyranny.
